Best Way to Drink Patron Extra Añejo

"To fully appreciate the complexity of Patron Extra Añejo, I recommend sipping it neat. This is a smooth and easy sipping Tequila that goes down with no major complication, making it an ideal sip at an attractive price when compared to the top Extra Añejo Tequilas.", suggests Tequila expert Neil Coleman

I personally advise against adding water; it tends to dilute the flavors, diminishing the experience, and much less as Tequila to make cocktails.

Glassware Preference

While a traditional Tequila glass might suffice for other types, Patron Extra Añejo's aromatic depth deserves more.

Opt for a whiskey tumbler; it allows the Tequila to breathe, enhancing the overall experience by not trapping its bouquet.

Additionally, you can have a Glencairn glass which is typically used to drink Scotch Whisky, but the whiskey rocks glass is good enough.

Tasting Notes

The nose begins with rich agave and oak scents, along with honey, tobacco, and a faint underlying banana fragrance.

Upon tasting, it presents a dense and velvety texture that provides a satisfying mouthfeel.

The taste profile hits with agave and rich oak, to later deliver flavors of dark chocolate, dried fruits, and notes of caramel.

The finish lingers, delivering a pleasing, lasting warmth with lingering traces of caramel and oak.

Tequila Shots

Using Patron Extra Añejo as a shooter is not the best choice since this is a sipping Tequila that deserves to be enjoyed next to the fireplace reflecting on life.

Drink Patron Silver in Tequila shots which is better suited for those purposes.

Cocktails

Extra Añejo Tequilas are not meant for mixing and Patron is no exception.

Given its price point, using Patron Extra Añejo in cocktails is a poor use of your hard-earned money.

Consider cheaper Añejo Tequilas like El Mayor or 1800 Añejo for cocktail mixing.

Yet, if you are determined to mix it in a cocktail, here are some suggestions for you to consider:

Añejo Manhattan:

  • 2 oz Tequila
  • 1 oz sweet vermouth
  • 2 dashes Angostura Bitters
  • Maraschino cherry for garnish

Directions:

  1. Pour the Tequila, sweet vermouth, and bitters into a mixing glass with ice.
  2. Stir until well chilled.
  3. Strain into a chilled cocktail glass.
  4. Garnish with a maraschino cherry.

Añejo Mint Julep:

  • 2 oz Tequila
  • 6-8 fresh mint leaves
  • 1/2 oz simple syrup
  • Crushed ice

Directions:

  1. Muddle the mint leaves and simple syrup at the bottom of a glass.
  2. Fill the glass with crushed ice.
  3. Pour in the Tequila.
  4. Stir well until the glass becomes frosty.
  5. Garnish with a sprig of fresh mint.

Food Pairinigs

Extra Añejo Tequilas pair nicely with desserts due to their sweet-tasting nature.

  1. Dark Chocolate Truffles: The smooth and velvety texture of dark chocolate truffles, with their deep cocoa flavors, pairs wonderfully with the complex and aged notes of Patrón Extra Añejo. The bittersweet chocolate complements the tequila's caramel and oak undertones.
  2. Caramel Flan: A classic Mexican dessert, caramel flan is rich, creamy, and sweet. Its caramelized sugar and custard flavors harmonize with the caramel and vanilla notes in Patrón Extra Añejo, creating a decadent combination.
  3. Tres Leches Cake: Tres Leches Cake is a moist sponge cake soaked in a mixture of three different types of milk: evaporated milk, condensed milk, and heavy cream. The sweetness and creaminess of the cake contrast beautifully with the tequila's oakiness and spiciness.
  4. Pineapple Upside-Down Cake: The tropical sweetness of pineapple upside-down cake, with its caramelized pineapple and brown sugar topping, complements the fruity and slightly citrusy notes found in Patrón Extra Añejo. It's a delightful pairing that offers a taste of the tropics.
  5. Toasted Pecan Pie: Pecan pie is a classic dessert with a gooey, nutty filling and a sweet, buttery crust. The toasted pecans and rich caramel flavors in the pie match well with the tequila's nutty and caramel undertones, creating a harmonious blend of flavors.

Storing Guidelines

  • As with all premium spirits, ensure Patron Extra Añejo is stored in a cool, dark place.
  • Keep the bottle upright and tightly sealed to preserve its taste.
  • Once opened and when the contents are reduced to 25%, aim to consume it promptly, as it may start developing funky flavors.
