Best Way to Drink Montelobos Mezcal
“Montelobos Mezcal, with its subtle smokiness, is best enjoyed neat — a sentiment shared by the many Mexicans who traditionally indulge in this spirit.”, mentions Tequila expert Neil Coleman.
A popular Mexican custom is to sip Mezcal while simultaneously sucking on an orange slice sprinkled with salt and chili powder.

Though this method is revered in its native land, I find that the chili powder can overshadow the mezcal’s intricate flavors, somewhat muting the tasting experience.
While I recognize the cultural significance of this ritual, it doesn’t quite resonate with me, especially when I’m trying to savor every nuance of a fine Mezcal.
The smokiness in Montelobos Mezcal is a testament to the agave cooking process, yet it remains lighter than many other mezcals in the market.
Additionally, with its 86-proof (43% ABV) label, it offers a slightly sharper kick than traditional tequilas.
Nevertheless, its composition ensures a smooth drinking journey that’s easy on the palate.
In summary, Montelobos Mezcal offers a versatile drinking experience that caters to both the traditionalist and the modern enthusiast, embodying the essence of this age-old spirit while leaving room for contemporary adaptations.
On the Rocks

While in Mexico, Mezcal is conventionally consumed without ice, incorporating ice or serving it in a chilled glass does wonders for the tasting experience, especially for those not familiar with its intensity.
If you’re just dipping your toes into Mezcal or desire a toned-down flavor profile, considering it on the rocks might be beneficial.
Pre-chilling the glass can add another dimension, emphasizing the mezcal’s multifaceted character.
Beyond its standalone brilliance, Montelobos Mezcal also stands out in cocktails, infusing them with its signature smoky charm.
In Shots
Though not my primary shooting choice, Montelobos Mezcal offers a memorable burst of smoky goodness.
For those who prefer a smoother shot, I recommend a Blanco Tequila.
Glassware Selection
In Mexico, mezcal is traditionally served in a “velita,” a glass that resembles the standard tequila glass but is broader and shorter, holding the same volume.
The name “velita” derives from its common use in churches to hold small candles (velas).
If you don’t have a velita on hand, I’d suggest using a whiskey rocks glass or whiskey tumbler.
Both are preferable to the typical tequila “caballito” glass.
Tasting Notes
Despite its assertive label, Montelobos offers a pleasantly smooth and velvety feel on the palate.
It presents a harmonious sweetness that doesn’t dominate, with an earthy and vegetal undertone.
The finish is crisp, leaving behind a sustained smoky note as the green bitterness fades gently away.
Crafting Cocktails

Montelobos is an ideal pick if you’re aiming to introduce a smoky twist to your beloved tequila-centric drink.
Moreover, its elevated proof gives the cocktail a more robust kick, elevating the overall satisfaction.
And finally, I have found mezcal as a great substitute for gin in cocktails.
Smoky Margarita
- 2 oz Mezcal
- 1 oz fresh lime juice
- 0.5 oz agave nectar
Shake, and serve over ice.
Mezcal Paloma
- 2 oz Mezcal
- 3 oz grapefruit soda
- A dash of lime
Combine over ice and stir gently.
Smoky Pineapple Delight
- 2 oz Mezcal
- 2 oz fresh pineapple juice
- 0.5 oz agave nectar
Shake well and pour.
Food Pairings

Montelobos Mezcal beautifully melds with hearty and rich flavors.
If you’re leaning towards savory options, think about coupling it with spicy chorizo tacos or a tangy ceviche.
This complements the mezcal’s unique profile.
On the other hand, if you’ve got a sweet tooth, the smoky essence of Montelobos truly shines when paired with the richness of dark chocolate or the sweet, charred taste of grilled pineapples.
These combinations craft a delightful and memorable tasting journey.
Storing the Mezcal Bottle
To maintain Montelobos Mezcal’s integrity:
- Keep the bottle upright.
- Store in a cool, dark place.
- Shield from direct sunlight.
While Mezcal’s flavor remains consistent once bottled, proper storage ensures you get the best out of every pour.
