J Highland

J Highland is a certified sommelier with 30 years in the liquor industry, owning a pub, a liquor store, and moonlighting as an agave spirits distiller.

These Tequilas are often hyped and overrated, with some offering better value for your money.

Quick Note: Running a pub and liquor store provides me ample access to various spirits, in addition, I moonlight as an agave spirits distiller. I assess them using customer feedback, expert opinions and online research.

Clase Azul Reposado

“Clase Azul Reposado Tequila is highly praised for its smoothness, but its sweetness raises suspicions of artificial sweeteners.”, states Tequila expert Neil Coleman.

The attractive decanter adds to its appeal as a decorative piece.

However, the liquid inside is overwhelmingly sweet, with subtle aromas of vanilla, butterscotch, and oak.

It has a creamy texture, lacks heat, and offers flavors of vanilla, butterscotch, brown sugar, wood, and hints of agave.

The finish is sweet with a touch of pepper, resembling bourbon with a touch of Splenda more than agave spirits, prompting questions about artificial sweetening.

While not inherently bad, its intense sweetness may not suit those seeking a less sugary experience.

Tesla Tequila

Tesla Tequila’s aroma is reminiscent of Don Julio 1942, featuring distinct agave scents with vanilla and oak undertones.

The taste is smooth and velvety, marked by artificial vanilla and subtle agave flavors, accented with a hint of oak.

Its finish is moderately long, providing a sweet taste with minimal warmth.

Tesla Tequila, priced at $250, faces criticism for its excessive sweetness, possibly artificial, and lacks a unique flavor to justify its cost.

In comparison, the less expensive Don Julio 1942 is typically preferred for premium Añejo Tequila.

Casa Dragones Blanco

Casa Dragones gained fame as Oprah Winfrey endorsed it as her preferred Tequila, sparking curiosity about her Tequila expertise and her friendship with MTV’s Robert Pittman, the brand’s owner.

Initially, it emits a harsh rubbing alcohol aroma, evolving into agave and citrus notes with aeration.

On the palate, it feels thin and lacks depth.

The flavor profile features a dominant anise note, and hints of mint, black pepper, and artificial sweetener.

It’s smooth but leaves a numbing sensation in the throat. The finish is short with subtle black pepper and mint presence.

Casa Dragones exhibits unusual aromas and flavors, not necessarily bad, but I wouldn’t recommend it.

The appealing packaging masks its use of an industrial diffuser method that doesn’t capture agave’s natural sweetness. In conclusion, Casa Dragones is overhyped, and its reputation is undeserved.

Adictivo Extra Añejo

Adictivo Tequila leans excessively sweet, limiting me to just one sip due to its cloying nature. The initial aroma is faint, but patience reveals hints of agave, oak from French barrels, cherry, vanilla, and a slight alcohol presence.

It offers undeniable smoothness and sweetness on the palate, devoid of harshness, alcohol burn, or bite, though disappointingly thin for its price. The flavor profile is mostly sweet with subtle hints of vanilla and apple.

Adictivo Cristalino caters to those craving an effortlessly sippable, remarkably sweet Tequila experience. The pronounced sweetness raises suspicions of artificial sweeteners, diverging from the natural sweetness of blue agave, potentially appealing to sweet enthusiasts but not to traditional agave flavor aficionados.

Michael Jordan’s Cincoro

cincoro-blanco

Cincoro Tequila disappoints to the extent that it doesn’t positively contribute to Michael Jordan’s legacy.

The aroma includes medicinal alcohol, roasted agave, and a hint of vanilla.

On the palate, it boasts a reasonable texture with flavors like roasted agave, citrus, cake batter, and an artificial sweetness that lacks authenticity.

The finish is moderately long, and excessively sweet, with a touch of black pepper.

Cincoro Blanco offers an easily approachable sweetness that departs from the typical agave spirit profile, possibly due to the use of artificial sweeteners to enhance its appeal.

While suitable for sipping neat or on the rocks, it’s not recommended as a mixer, as its excessive sweetness doesn’t complement Margaritas and other cocktails.

Patron Silver

Unlike the Tequilas mentioned earlier, which often have artificial tasting notes, it should be noted that Patron is a genuine Tequila, free from additives and foreign substances, providing an authentic experience.

However, it’s worth mentioning that while Patron is good, it doesn’t rank as the best Silver Tequila within its competitive category.

In my list of the Best Silver Tequilas under $30, you’ll find other options with similar profiles.

Patron Silver has distinct aromas of agave, black pepper, and a hint of ethanol that dissipates with aeration.

It offers a creamy texture, a noticeable alcohol presence initially, followed by notes of blue agave, citrus, and pepper.

The finish is long with pleasant warmth and peppery undertones.
