Best Way to Drink Gran Centenario Tequila

“Gran Centenario is best enjoyed over ice and works well in cocktails. It’s a smooth, mostly sweet Tequila with 28 days of maturation in French Limousin casks, giving it a light amber hue and barrel-aged tasting notes. The finish has a slight bitterness but remains tolerable.”, mentions Tequila expert Neil Coleman.

While it lacks the intricate nuances of top Blanco Tequilas, it offers a decent sip for those seeking an easy-drinking option without a hefty price tag.

The optimal way to enjoy Gran Centenario is with ice, preferably large cubes to avoid excessive dilution.

It’s bottled at 80 proof (40% ABV), so too much dilution weakens its flavor.

Taking Shots

Gran Centenario is a suitable choice for sipping since it’s smooth and causes a minimal burn, making it a good option for Tequila shots.

Glass Selection

A whiskey rocks glass is ideal for enjoying Gran Centenario, allowing generous ice addition.

Alternatively, a Tequila shot glass is suitable for taking it in one shot.

Fine glassware like Riedel or Glencairn isn’t necessary, as Gran Centenario lacks the characteristics best appreciated with these premium glasses.

Flavor Notes

Gran Centenario has a scent reminiscent of Lifesaver candy, accompanied by a subtle hint of rubber and baking soda.

Initially, on the palate, it offers a smooth, sweet flavor with vanilla and oak notes.

However, it gradually develops a mild bitterness and lacks body and texture.

The finish is short and uninspiring, with minimal warmth and a dominant taste of vanilla and black pepper.

Cocktails

Centenario is versatile and lends itself well to a range of cocktail recipes:

Citrus Fusion:

  • 2 oz Tequila
  • 1 oz fresh grapefruit juice
  • 0.5 oz lime juice
  • Splash of agave syrup

Instructions: Mix all ingredients in a shaker with ice. Shake and strain into a glass. Garnish with a grapefruit wedge.

Tropical Bliss:

  • 2 oz Tequila
  • 3 chunks of mango
  • 1 oz pineapple juice
  • Splash of lime

Instructions: Muddle mango in a shaker, add other ingredients, shake well, and strain. Serve chilled with a slice of mango.

Rosy Refresher:

  • 2 oz Tequila
  • 2 oz rose water
  • 1 oz lemon juice
  • A pinch of salt

Instructions: Combine all ingredients in a shaker, shake vigorously, and pour into a glass. Garnish with a rose petal.

Food Pairings

ceviche

These dishes are recommended to pair with Centenario:

  1. Classic Ceviche: A traditional ceviche made with fresh white fish, lime juice, cilantro, onions, and diced tomatoes pairs beautifully with Centenario Plata. The tequila’s crisp and citrusy notes complement the acidity and freshness of the ceviche.
  2. Shrimp Tacos: Shrimp tacos with a zesty lime-cilantro slaw and a touch of spicy mayo provide a fantastic pairing for Centenario Plata Tequila. The tequila’s subtle fruitiness enhances the flavors of the shrimp and the cilantro.
  3. Grilled Mahi-Mahi: Grilled Mahi-Mahi topped with a tropical fruit salsa, such as mango or pineapple, creates a delightful combination with Centenario Plata. The tequila’s fruity undertones harmonize with the sweet and tangy flavors of the salsa.
  4. Avocado and Grapefruit Salad: A refreshing salad featuring avocado slices and segments of pink grapefruit, drizzled with a citrus vinaigrette, offers a light and citrusy pairing for this Tequila. The tequila’s fruit-forward notes complement the salad’s flavors.
  5. Fish Tostadas: Crispy tostadas topped with seasoned fish, pickled red onions, and a drizzle of lime crema create a satisfying pairing with Centenario. The tequila’s smooth and fruity profile complements the variety of flavors and textures in this dish.

Storing Your Bottle

To keep your Centenario Tequila at its best:

  • Store: In a shaded place, away from sunlight.
  • Position: Always upright.
  • Seal: Ensure it’s tightly closed to maintain its rich flavor profile.

Consume soon once you near the bottle’s end to experience its full spectrum of flavors.
