Sipping on a crisp, clear glass of Blanco Tequila, the last thing on our mind is additives.

However, beneath the spirited facade of Blanco Tequila lies the obscured reality of additives.

This post aims to unveil the truth surrounding additives in Blanco Tequila and why consumers should be cautious.

Can Blanco Tequila Contain Additives?

“Due to subtle regulatory nuances, not only is it possible for Blanco Tequila to contain additives, but a staggering 80% of them are estimated to do so. These additives can constitute up to 4% of the total content, a leap from the original 1% limit set in 1994. This shift can significantly alter the taste and body of Blanco Tequila.”, states Tequila expert Neil Coleman.

Common Undisclosed Additives

The most prevalent undisclosed additives include sweeteners, vanilla, synthetic agave aromas, and glycerin, which adds body to the distillate.

Distillers are not legally bound to disclose the use of these additives, leaving consumers in the dark about the true nature of what they are consuming.

This lack of transparency hides the true essence of the Tequila, possibly overshadowing the authentic, rich flavors derived from agave and consequently impacting the consumer’s drinking experience.

Why Are These Additives Used?

The primary purpose of additives in Blanco Tequila is to modify its flavor and aroma, making it appealing to a wider audience.

By introducing subtle notes of sweetness or vanilla, distillers can mask the bold, natural flavors of agave, creating a more ‘approachable’ drink to potentially attract more buyers.

How to Detect Additives?

Detecting additives in Blanco Tequila can be a challenge.

However, Tequilas with additives often betray themselves through distinct notes of vanilla and cake batter, with an aftertaste reminiscent of Splenda – flavors nearly impossible to achieve in spirits that haven’t been barreled, thus strongly suggesting the presence of additives.

Clarifying the Limits

The regulation (NOM) initially allowed a maximum of 1% of total additives in 1994, which subtly changed in 1997 to 1% of each of the four additives, totaling 4%.

This implies that a Tequila can legally contain 96% original agave content and 4% additives and still be labeled as 100% agave, with no obligation to disclose the presence of additives.

Implications and Limitations

The law’s allowances and the sugar limit stipulations aren’t stringent, allowing for more added sugar or sugar solution than the stipulated 75g/L.

Since most additives aren’t in dry extract form, the 85g/L limit is not restrictive.

Full Disclosure and Flavor Alteration

While producers can considerably alter Tequila’s flavor, full disclosure is mandatory if the flavoring exceeds the allowed limits; thus technically, consumers are entitled to know if the flavor has been significantly altered.

Consumer Awareness

Awareness of these regulatory subtleties assists in making informed choices, ensuring an authentic Tequila experience, especially in the case of Blanco Tequila, which should primarily reflect agave’s natural sweetness and richness.

My Stance on Additives

While I am not fundamentally against additives, the lack of transparency surrounding their use is concerning.

A more open dialogue between distillers and consumers is crucial for making informed decisions, and finding a bottle that aligns with individual tastes and preferences, whether additive-free or not.

In Summary

Understanding the legislation on additives, especially concerning flavoring and mellowing additives, is crucial when navigating the intricate world of Tequila.

For aficionados seeking a pure, additive-free Tequila experience, discerning between natural and artificial elements becomes a journey of authenticity over artificial enhancement, in pursuit of the unadulterated harmony of agave, water, and natural yeast.
