Best Way to Drink Casamigos Mezcal

“Casamigos Mezcal stands out as a light mezcal that’s best appreciated neat. Contrary to many mezcals which often have a pronounced smokiness, Casamigos offers a smoother experience with only a faint hint of smoky undertone.”, mentions Tequila expert Neil Coleman.
For the most authentic tasting experience, it’s recommended to serve Casamigos Mezcal at room temperature, allowing every nuanced flavor to come forth.

On the Rocks

Mezcal is usually enjoyed without ice, especially in Oaxaca, Mexico.
Here, it’s traditionally served in a glass resembling a Tequila Caballito but with a shorter and wider design called a “velita”.
This glass design is also often found in churches, holding candles.
If you opt to have Casamigos Mezcal on the rocks, it’s advisable to use large ice cubes to prevent excessive dilution, given its lower-proof bottling (40% ABV).
Another option is to chill the glass in the freezer as I do.
In fact, I have a stash of velitas in my freezer waiting to be called to action.
Tasting Notes
The scent is understated, needing a deep sniff to catch its nuances.
Digging deeper, there’s a whisper of agave paired with citrus and the slightest hint of smoke.
Casamigos Mezcal offers a mellow and soft taste, missing a robust character or standout flavors.
Subdued notes of agave, vanilla, and citrus come through, but there’s no trace of smokiness.
Its aftertaste is short-lived, without any memorable warmth or striking features.
Shots
Casamigos Mezcal is meant to be sipped and savored, showing its light flavors.
Taking it as a shot misses out on what makes it special.
For those shot moments, it’s better to drink Casamigos Blanco Tequila.
Making Cocktails

Casamigos Mezcal isn’t my top pick for mixing in cocktails due to its subtle smoky touch that can get overshadowed in a mix.
Plus, its cost makes me think twice about using it in such a way.
Instead, I’d lean towards something like Montelobos, which is both smooth and more budget-friendly and carries a bolder flavor perfect for cocktails.
But if you’re set on using Casamigos Mezcal for a cocktail, here are some suggestions for you:
Mezcal Smoky Margarita:
- 2 oz Mezcal
- 1 oz fresh lime juice
- 0.75 oz agave syrup
- Salt for rimming
Instructions: Rim the glass with salt. In a shaker, mix mezcal, lime juice, and agave syrup with ice. Shake and strain into the prepared glass.
Mezcal Sunrise:
- 2 oz Mezcal
- 3 oz fresh orange juice
- 0.5 oz grenadine
Instructions: Combine mezcal and orange juice in a shaker, shake, and pour into a glass. Slowly add grenadine for a sunrise effect.
Food Pairings

Casamigos Mezcal pairs nicely with:
- Roasted vegetables
- Spicy dishes, particularly with chili undertones
- Dark chocolate
The inherent smokiness serves as a lovely backdrop to foods that carry a bit of heat.
Storing the Bottle
Proper storage is paramount:
- Keep the bottle upright.
- Store it away from sunlight.
- A cool, dry environment is ideal.
Given its strong profile, even a half-finished bottle retains its flavors for a long duration.
