Reposado Tequila Alcohol Content: My Deep Dive into its Strength
Written by: J Highland

Revered as the ‘rested’ Tequila, it bridges the gap between the unaged essence of Blanco and the mature sophistication of Añejo.
But what’s the deal with its alcohol content? Does it stand apart from other Tequilas? Here’s what I’ve discovered on my journey.
My Observations on Standard Reposado Alcohol Content
“Reposado Tequila’s alcohol content spans from 35% to 55% ABV. However, the standard Reposado, especially in the U.S., is typically bottled at 40% ABV.”, states Tequila expert Neil Coleman.

The Mexican Experience

In Mexico, Reposado is often bottled at a slightly reduced proof, usually hovering between 35% and 38% ABV.
This is mainly due to the nation’s tax regulations.
The Tequila has been further diluted with water before being sealed, a fact to consider when buying Tequila in Mexico.
What Influences Reposado’s Alcohol Content?
The initial distillation is the main determinant of Tequila’s base alcohol content, and this doesn’t change dramatically during Reposado’s aging.
However, when I dived deeper, I learned that factors like altitude and atmospheric pressure at the distillery can introduce subtle shifts in the final ABV.
Does Resting Reposado Alter Its Strength?
While those oak barrels impart flavor, color, and depth to Reposado, they don’t shift its alcohol meter much.
Yes, there’s a bit of evaporation of water and alcohol, the “Angel’s Share” as it’s romantically termed, but the difference to the ABV is minuscule.
A Personal Note on Higher Alcohol Content
In my tasting experiences, I’ve found that a heightened ABV can genuinely elevate Tequila flavors without necessarily turning up the heat, as long as the distillation is on point.
It’s a delicate dance of strength and flavor and speaks volumes about a distiller’s craft.
Comparing Reposado to My Other Favorites
As I ventured beyond Tequila, sampling spirits from around the globe, I noted that Tequila, Reposado included, generally keeps company with many whiskeys, rums, and vodkas in terms of ABV.
But a piece of advice from one spirit lover to another: always glance at the label.
Artisanal or boutique Tequilas can throw in a surprise.
In Conclusion
My relationship with Reposado Tequila has been one of reverence and curiosity.
With its mesmerizing amber allure and layered flavors, understanding its alcohol content has only enriched my appreciation.
Whether I’m savoring a glass neat, over ice, or shaken into a cocktail, knowing its ABV sets the stage for a deeper, more informed experience.
Always remember, the beauty lies in the sip, not the gulp.
Cheers to informed and responsible sipping!
