Espolon Blanco shines for its attractive label and I'm often asked how to drink it.

In this post, I will tell you how to make the best use of it.

Best Way to Drink Espolon Blanco

"Espolon Blanco shines brightest when mixed in cocktails or taken as quick Tequila shots. While its slightly warm and peppery notes might not position it as a premier sipping option, its attributes and price make it perfect for exploring Tequila-infused mixed drinks.", suggests Tequila expert Neil Coleman.

Furthermore, it's excellent as a straight-up Tequila shooter.

Is it Good for Sipping?

I wouldn't suggest it as a sipping choice, but its character improves when cooled or poured over a generous amount of ice.

Keeping it in the fridge tames its alcoholic edge, rendering it more palatable.

On the Rocks

Opting to enjoy it on the rocks is a good choice for Espolon, but it's advisable to use large ice cubes to minimize dilution. This is especially important since it's bottled at a modest 80-proof, and excessive dilution can substantially weaken its flavor profile.

Choice of Glassware

I recommend using a rocks glass for the option of adding ice.

For shots, the caballito (Tequila glass) is the weapon of choice.

Tasting Notes

The smell is a mix of earthy scents with a bit of black pepper and a light alcohol hint.

When you taste it, Espolon Blanco has a mild warmth that grows into a sweet fruity flavor with a hint of vanilla.

The aftertaste lasts a bit and has a citrusy and spicy kick.

In Shots

Espolon Blanco stands out as an ideal choice for Tequila shots, especially for those seeking a mild yet pleasing burn.

Its affordable price point further encourages these quick, flavorful interactions, making it a favorite among tequila enthusiasts.

In Cocktails

Espolón Blanco's vibrant profile makes it an excellent base for various cocktails.

Margarita:

  • 2 oz Tequila
  • 1 oz fresh lime juice
  • 0.75 oz triple sec

Shake ingredients with ice and strain into a salt-rimmed glass.

Paloma:

  • 2 oz Tequila
  • 3 oz grapefruit soda
  • Squeeze of a lime wedge

Mix in a glass with ice and garnish with a lime slice.

Food Pairings

jalapeno-poppers

Espolòn Blanco, with its crisp and clean profile with hints of sweet agave and pepper, pairs exceptionally well with spicy and lively foods. Here are five such food pairings that would complement this tequila:

  1. Spicy Fish Tacos with Cilantro-Lime Slaw: The lightness of the fish, combined with the heat from a spicy rub or sauce and the tang of the slaw, pairs well with Espolòn. The tequila's clean taste can cut through the spiciness and complement the freshness of the dish.
  2. Jalapeño Poppers: These deep-fried or baked jalapeños stuffed with cheese and possibly wrapped in bacon are a delightful match. The creamy cheese and the heat from the jalapeños work well with the peppery notes of the tequila.
  3. Chipotle Chicken Enchiladas: The smoky spice of the chipotle and the richness of the chicken are balanced by the smooth and sweet notes of the tequila. The spice level of the enchiladas can bring out the tequila’s subtle complexities.
  4. Spicy Thai Green Curry with Chicken or Shrimp: The intense heat and flavors of a Thai green curry, with its blend of chili, lemongrass, and coconut, create a dynamic pairing with this Tequila.
  5. Szechuan Stir-Fry with Peppers and Tofu or Beef: The fiery Szechuan pepper and the richness of the stir-fried vegetables or meat can be harmoniously paired with the tequila. The alcohol can cool down the intense heat while enhancing the dish’s depth.

Storing the Bottle

To maintain its fresh character:

  • Store it away from direct sunlight in a cool spot.
  • Always keep the bottle upright.
  • Ensure the cap is tightly sealed to retain its flavors.

When nearing the bottle's end, finish it to preserve its original zest.

Quick Note: Running a pub and liquor store provides me ample access to various spirits, in addition, I moonlight as an agave spirits distiller. I assess them using customer feedback, expert opinions and online research.
