Best Way to Drink Herradura Añejo
"Herradura Añejo Tequila is ideally served on the rocks, as the cold temperature mitigates its intensity, rendering it more mellow and sippable.", mentions Tequila expert Neil Coleman.
While it's a respectable offering, it doesn't quite reach the best Añejo Tequilas.
The primary issue with this Tequila is its dominant oak taste, which tends to overpower other potential flavors, limiting its complexity.
Top-tier Añejo Tequilas achieve a harmonious blend of oak with a strong agave presence, complemented by hints of vanilla and caramel.
In contrast, Herradura Añejo overly emphasizes the oak aspect.
Moreover, it concludes with a somewhat heated finish.
Although not entirely off-putting, this finish lacks the smoothness characteristic of the finest selections in this competitive category.

Herradura Añejo on the Rocks

Herradura Añejo is presented at a modest 80-proof (40% ABV), so when opting for ice, it's advisable to use larger cubes to minimize dilution.
Overwatering can significantly diminish the flavor, resulting in a less impressive sipping experience.
Glassware Selection

When drinking Herradura Añejo, choosing a whiskey tumbler is recommended.
This glass type is ideal for accommodating large ice cubes, which slowly melt and gently chill the Tequila without excessive dilution.
The wide opening of the tumbler also enhances the tequila's aroma, offering a more immersive tasting experience.
Tequila Shots

Añejo Tequilas, in my opinion, are better suited for sipping rather than taking shots.
They are crafted for a more leisurely enjoyment.
For shots, Herradura Silver offers a more enjoyable and cost-effective alternative.
Tasting Notes
The opening notes of Herradura subtly blend vanilla and oak, complemented by caramel and agave.
The taste offers a delightful mouthfeel, introducing a warming sensation, and oak-dominated flavor with a hint of barrel spice on the first sip.
As consumption continues, its complexity grows, revealing layers of vanilla, ripe fruit, and agave.
The finish lingers, providing a warm feel with a more pronounced oak character.
In Cocktails

Herradura Añejo can be used as a substitute for Bourbon in whiskey-based cocktails while adding agave flavor.

Food Pairings

Consider these dishes when sipping Herradura Añejo:
- Grilled Steak: The smoky richness of grilled steak complements the robust, oaky flavors of Herradura Añejo.
- Spicy Shrimp Tacos: The spice and zestiness of the shrimp tacos are balanced by the smooth, warm notes of the Añejo.
- Dark Chocolate: A piece of dark chocolate enhances Tequila's deep flavors, especially its caramel and vanilla notes.
- Aged Cheddar Cheese: The sharpness and depth of aged cheddar pair well with the rich, oaky character of Herradura Añejo.
- Roasted Pork Belly: The succulent, fatty richness of roasted pork belly is beautifully cut through by the warm, spicy notes of the Añejo.
Storage Tips
- Storage: Store the bottle upright in a cool, dimly lit place to preserve its flavor and clarity.
- Sealing: Make sure the bottle is tightly sealed after every use.
- Consumption: While Herradura doesn't spoil, consuming it sooner rather than later is advisable for the best taste experience.
Quick Note: Running a pub and liquor store provides me ample access to various spirits, in addition, I moonlight as an agave spirits distiller. I assess them using customer feedback, expert opinions and online research.
