The Expert’s Take: Gold Tequila in Margaritas
According to Tequila expert Neil Coleman, Gold Tequila isn’t suitable for margaritas due to its lack of authenticity: “It’s not crafted from 100% agave, contains artificial additives, and should be avoided in favor of affordable, genuine alternatives for a better margarita experience.”
5 Reasons Why Gold Tequila is Bad for Margaritas
While making a decent Margarita using Gold Tequila is possible, I highly recommend avoiding it due to the following 5 clear disadvantages.
1. Gold Tequilas are not 100% agave
The government permits distillers in Mexico to label their bottles as Tequila as long as they incorporate at least 51% agave.
However, it is common practice for distillers to supplement the mix with undisclosed sugar sources and other foreign chemicals which can adversely affect your health.
2. Gold Tequilas are fattening
High-quality Tequilas are known for being low in sugar, containing only around 97 calories per shot.
They are also suitable for various diets, such as keto and vegan, making them a favorable choice among nutritionists.
However, it is essential to note that these benefits do not extend to Gold Tequilas, as they tend to be higher in sugar and can contribute to weight gain.
3. Gold Tequila gives Hangovers
Spirits made from 100% agave have a distinct sugar composition that is less likely to cause headaches and hangovers the next day.
Unfortunately, this unique characteristic is lost when distillers blend different sugar sources like sugar cane and agave.
That’s why it’s always recommended to look for Tequilas labeled as 100% agave when selecting.
4. Gold Tequilas use Chemicals
Gold Tequilas utilize artificial flavorings and colorants that are unnecessary for your body and can harm your health.
5. Gold Tequilas taste like rocket fuel
When mixed with grain or sugar cane, the agave loses its natural sweetness, tasting like rocket fuel.
