In this post, I share with you how I enjoy Don Julio Reposado, a Tequila aged 8 months in bourbon barrels.

Best Way to Drink Don Julio Reposado

"Don Julio Reposado shines when sipped neat or over ice. This Tequila is rich in agave taste, complemented by hints of vanilla, oak, and caramel from its barrel aging. A slight bitterness in the finish enhances its balanced palate.", suggests Tequila expert Neil Coleman.

Its smoothness, paired with minimal burn, renders it a good Reposado for sipping.

On the Rocks

Sipping Don Julio over ice brings out its smoother side.

The chilling tends to soften its edges and amplify the sweet, oaky notes.

For a refined experience, opt for large ice cubes to prevent excessive dilution.

Pairing it with a pre-chilled Tequila glass is also recommended.

Shots

While Don Julio can certainly be taken as a shot, its depth is best savored slowly.

There are several affordable Reposados that can provide the same effect for half the price.

However, if shots are your preference, you'll find its journey down the throat quite smooth, without the fiery bite some tequilas possess.

Glassware Selection

When drinking Don Julio Reposado, opting for a whiskey rocks glass or tumbler can elevate the experience compared to traditional Tequila shot glasses, which are more fitting for inexpensive Tequilas.

The design of glasses like the Glencairn amplifies the aromas, providing a more immersive sensory delight.

Tasting Notes

The nose of Don Julio Reposado is dominated by roasted agave, complemented by undertones of caramel, vanilla, and oak.

Its texture on the palate is velvety and smooth.

Taste-wise, it presents a harmonious mix of agave and vanilla, accented by citrusy undertones and hints of caramel and oak.

The finish extends from medium to long without much heat.

There's a sustained taste of agave, vanilla, and caramel, rounded off by a mild bitter touch, ensuring a balanced ending.

Making Cocktails

While Don Julio isn't my top Reposado Tequila for cocktail-making due to its premium price point, if you're inclined to craft a drink with it, here are three simple cocktail recipes using just three ingredients each:

Citrus Splash

  • 2 oz Tequila
  • 1 oz fresh lime juice
  • Soda water to top
Instructions: Pour Don Julio and lime juice into a glass. Top with soda water and stir gently.

Reposado Sunrise

  • 2 oz Tequila
  • 3 oz fresh orange juice
  • Splash of grenadine
Instructions: Pour Don Julio and orange juice into a glass. Drizzle grenadine over the top, allowing it to settle at the bottom. Do not stir.

Agave Bliss

  • 2 oz Tequila
  • 1 oz agave nectar
  • 1 oz fresh lemon juice
Instructions: Combine all ingredients in a shaker with ice. Shake well and strain into a glass.

Food Pairings

  1. Grilled Shrimp Tacos: The smoky flavor of the grilled shrimp pairs wonderfully with the oak notes in the Reposado. Add some fresh lime and cilantro for a zesty touch that complements the tequila's smoothness.
  2. Chicken Mole: The complexity of mole sauce, with its rich blend of chocolate, chilies, and spices, harmonizes with the warm, woody notes of the Reposado. The tequila can cut through the richness of the mole, balancing the dish beautifully.
  3. Ceviche: A classic Latin American dish, ceviche's citrusy and fresh flavors can enhance the light, crisp notes of the Reposado. The tequila's smooth finish pairs well with the tangy and slightly spicy ceviche.
  4. Carnitas: Slow-cooked, tender pork carnitas with a hint of sweetness can be a delightful pairing for Don Julio Reposado. The tequila's vanilla notes and the savory, rich flavors of the pork create a satisfying combination.
  5. Grilled Vegetables with Queso Fresco: Grilled vegetables like bell peppers, zucchini, and onions, topped with crumbled queso fresco, make for a lighter pairing. The charred, smoky flavors of the vegetables and the creaminess of the cheese complement the smooth and subtle flavors of the Reposado.

Storing Your Tequila Bottle

To maintain its integrity:

  • Store the bottle upright to avoid any contact with the stopper.
  • Place in a cool, dark environment.
  • Avoid direct sunlight.

Tequila’s character remains consistent once bottled, but proper storage ensures its quality remains unaltered.

Quick Note: Running a pub and liquor store provides me ample access to various spirits, in addition, I moonlight as an agave spirits distiller. I assess them using customer feedback, expert opinions and online research.
