In this post, I share with you How I Drink Patron Reposado, a Tequila aged for 2 months in oak barrels.

Best Way to Drink Patron Reposado

"For the optimal experience, enjoy Patron Reposado over ice using large cubes to reduce watering it down. Its feel is oily, with a warmth that's a tad stronger than anticipated, accompanied by hints of cinnamon, clove, and a touch of oaky spice. While it might not rank as the top Reposado Tequila due to its less intricate and smooth flavors, it still offers a decent sip.", mentions Tequila expert Neil Coleman.

On the Rocks

Sipping Patron Reposado on the rocks is a fine choice, but it's advisable to use large ice cubes to minimize dilution.

Since it's bottled at a modest 80-proof, excessive dilution can weaken its flavor profile significantly.

Glass Choice

A classic Tequila glass or even a basic tumbler will suffice.

Considering its robust flavors, these glasses should frame its character just right.

Tasting Notes

Initially, you'll detect a mix of agave and oak on the nose, with a slight alcohol scent that fades after letting it breathe for a few moments.

The taste surprisingly leans heavily on oak, especially for a reposado aged for only two months.

Though there's a touch of sweetness, it comes across sharper than anticipated, with a clove taste that might not be to everyone's liking.

The end note is warm, marked by a peppery kick and a subtle vanilla undertone.

Shots

If you're in the mood for a Tequila shot, I'd suggest going with Patron Silver.

It's a better pick for quick sips compared to its reposado counterpart.

However, if you're set on a Reposado shot, consider alternatives like Espolón Reposado; it delivers a superior experience and is more wallet-friendly.

Cocktails

I'd think twice before pouring Patron Reposado into a cocktail, given its price.

There are plenty of cost-effective Reposado Tequilas that blend seamlessly into drinks without breaking the bank.

But if you're set on using it, here are some ideas to make the most out of it:

Margarita

  • 2 oz Tequila
  • 1 oz fresh orange juice
  • 0.5 oz lime juice

Shake all components with ice, strain into a salt-rimmed glass, and adorn with an orange slice.

Tequila Highball

  • 2 oz Tequila
  • Tonic water

Fill a tall glass with ice. Add the liquor and top with tonic. Stir lightly. Garnish with a lemon twist.

Spiced Reposado Sour

  • 2 oz Tequila
  • 1 oz lemon juice
  • 0.5 oz honey syrup

Muddle a cinnamon stick at the glass base. Add ice, Tequila, lemon juice, and syrup. Stir well. Garnish with a cinnamon stick.

Food Pairings

Here are five food pairings to complement Patrón Reposado:

  1. Grilled Chicken Tacos: Grilled chicken tacos with a medley of fresh toppings, such as salsa, guacamole, and shredded lettuce, provide a satisfying and savory pairing with this Reposado. The tequila's oakiness complements the grilled flavors of the chicken.
  2. Honey-Glazed Salmon: Honey-glazed salmon, with its sweet and savory profile, harmonizes beautifully with the smooth and slightly caramelized notes of Patrón.
  3. Caramelized Onion and Mushroom Quesadillas: Quesadillas filled with caramelized onions, mushrooms, and melted cheese offer a delightful pairing with this Tequila.
  4. Mole Poblano: Mole Poblano, a complex Mexican sauce made with chocolate and spices, pairs well with Patrón.
  5. Tres Leches Cake: Tres Leches Cake, a moist sponge cake soaked in a mixture of three different types of milk, provides a luscious and sweet pairing with this Reposado.

Storing Tips

Reposado, like all Tequilas, remains good indefinitely with the right storage.

  • Place: A cool, shaded spot will keep its quality intact.
  • Orientation: Store standing up to avoid cork damage and potential taste shifts.
  • Seal: Keep the bottle tightly closed to ward off flavor changes from air exposure.

After the bottle goes below a quarter, I suggest enjoying it faster to preserve its prime flavors.

Quick Note: Running a pub and liquor store provides me ample access to various spirits, in addition, I moonlight as an agave spirits distiller. I assess them using customer feedback, expert opinions and online research.
