Best Way to Drink Del Maguey Mezcal
“Del Maguey Vida Mezcal is a great pick for cocktails, especially as a smoky alternative to tequila, adding an intriguing twist to the drinks. It can also replace gin in cocktails like the Negroni, offering a unique flavor experience.”, according to agave spirits expert Neil Coleman.
However, for those looking for a smooth sipping Mezcal, Del Maguey Vida might not be ideal due to its potential bitterness after several sips.
In essence, Del Maguey Vida stands out in mixed drinks but may not meet expectations as a standalone sipping spirit due to its less refined qualities.

On the Rocks
In Mexico, Mezcal is traditionally enjoyed neat, often accompanied by orange slices sprinkled with chili pepper.
However, you can also add large ice cubes to chill the drink and make it more palatable.
Choosing the Right Glassware
Mezcal is traditionally served in a “velita” glass, commonly found in churches holding candles.
This glass, shorter and wider than a tequila shot glass, holds the same amount.
If a velita glass is unavailable, a tequila shot glass or a whiskey rocks glass can be suitable alternatives for enjoying Mezcal.
In Shots
Del Maguey doesn’t top my list for taking shots as its somewhat warm and bitter taste leads me to prefer tequila for this purpose.
Tasting Notes
The aroma starts with a distinct smokiness, layered with more smoke, agave, tobacco, and touches of aged leather.
Tasting it, the first sip offers a somewhat bitter character, marked by smoky and mineral notes, subtly accentuated by black pepper.
The finish is fairly brief, ending with a bitter taste and persistent smoky undertones.

Food Pairings
Pairing Del Maguey Mezcal with food can be a delightful culinary adventure, thanks to its distinct smoky and complex flavor profile. Here are five food pairings that complement this unique spirit:
Grilled Seafood
- The smoky notes of Del Maguey Mezcal pair wonderfully with grilled seafood, such as shrimp or scallops. The char from the grill and the smokiness of the mezcal create a harmonious taste experience.
Spicy Tacos
- The robust, smoky flavor of the mezcal can stand up to the spiciness of tacos, especially those with rich, spicy sauces or seasoned meats like carnitas or barbacoa.
Dark Chocolate
- A piece of high-quality dark chocolate can complement the smoky and sometimes slightly bitter notes of Del Maguey Mezcal. The bitterness of the chocolate pairs nicely with the complex flavors of the mezcal.
BBQ Ribs
- The sweet and tangy flavors of barbecue sauce on ribs can balance the smoky intensity of mezcal. The combination of smoky meat and smoky spirit is a match made in heaven.
Cheese Platter
- A platter featuring a variety of cheeses, particularly strong ones like blue cheese or aged cheddar, can pair well with Del Maguey Mezcal. The bold flavors of the cheese complement the mezcal’s intensity.
How to store it
- Storage: Store the bottle upright in a cool, dim area to preserve its flavor and clarity.
- Sealing: Always tightly reseal the bottle after use.
- Consumption: While Del Maguey doesn’t spoil, it’s best to consume it quickly once it reaches 25% remaining to prevent any deterioration in taste.
