  • Quick Note: Running a pub and liquor store provides me ample access to various spirits, in addition, I moonlight as an agave spirits distiller. I assess them using customer feedback, expert opinions and online research.

Corralejo Silver: A Boozy Blanco with a Kick

Corralejo Silver's initial aroma is a punch of alcohol softened by peppery hints. After breathing, subtle agave and orange notes emerge. The taste is warming and boozy at first, but past the initial harshness, peppery spice, ripe fruit, and minerality come through. The long finish lingers with pepper and a touch of fruit.

Overall, the strong alcohol presence dominates, making it ideal for mixed drinks seeking a kick rather than sipping neat, states tequila expert Neil Coleman.

Corralejo Reposado: Smoky, Bold Reposado for Cocktails

Corralejo Reposado opens with roasted agave, a touch of smoke, and a hint of alcohol. The taste is hot and bold, bursting with black pepper, agave, caramel, oak, and lingering smoke. The finish is long and warm, offering pleasant caramel and oak spice.

While not the smoothest for sipping, its unique smokiness and warmth make it exciting. Corralejo Reposado shines in cocktails, and its attractive price makes it a great choice for budget-friendly mixing or those seeking a punchy reposado.

Aged: Four months in French and American oak barrels.

Corralejo Añejo: Uniquely Clove-Forward Añejo

corralejo-anejo

Corralejo Añejo offers a bourbon-like nose with vanilla, oak, and caramel alongside subtle blue agave. The taste is rich in clove and cinnamon, followed by oak, agave, and a light peppery burn. The long finish is warm with lingering clove.

While smooth, it lacks complexity and has an intense clove presence that some might find unusual. It's not my personal choice, but I wouldn't refuse a sip.

Unique Feature: Presented in a red bottle (tequila is amber colored)

Aged: 12 months in ex-bourbon barrels

Corralejo 1821 Extra Añejo: Oak Rules This Extra Añejo

Corralejo-1821-Extra-Anejo

Corralejo 1821 Extra Añejo's nose is all about sweetness - caramel leading the way with vanilla and oak char trailing behind. The taste is moderately warm with a strong, bitter oak presence that overshadows the agave and subtle spices. While some sweetness peeks through, oak reigns supreme. The finish is medium-length, echoing the oak with a touch of caramel and lingering warmth.

It makes a good choice for those who want an oak-forward taste.

Aged: 36 months

Tribute to: Mexico's independence year (1821)
